Sam Tsui:
Breeding and Culture of Slipper Orchids
Meeting:
Sam
was born in Hong Kong on November 23, 1952.
He traveled to the United States at age 22 and attended Illinois State
University graduating with major degree in computer science and a minor in
accounting. Before graduation Sam was
employed by Country Companies Insurance and Investment Group, based in Bloomington-Normal,
Illinois. He has since completed his
MBA, and is currently an application software specialist in their Information
Systems Division.
Sam met Jeanie Ting while studying at the
university. Jeanie is also from Hong
Kong. They were married In May, 1983.
He began growing orchids in 1983. After trying many types of orchids he became
a serious Paphiopedilum grower in 1985.
In 1991 he began hybridizing with Paphiopedilums and continues that work
today. Currently he makes over 200
crosses per year. As he became more involved with
Paphiopedilums he started selling commercially in 1995 as the Orchid Inn. Sam currently fills orders from around the
world and attends approximately 15 orchid shows/conferences a year. He has spoken at the World Orchid
Conference in Vancouver, Canada 1999 and does a few Paphiopedilum programs to
orchid societies and groups annually.
Hybridizing is Sam’s passion. He emphasizes the Parvisepalum and
multifloral groups in his latest breeding work.
Numerous American Orchid Society and Cymbidium
Society of America Awards have been bestowed on Sam’s orchids. His most prestigious award were an 90 points
FCC/AOS award received in May, 1998 for Paphiopedilum rothschildianum ‘Sam’s
Best’; an 93 points CCE/AOS and 87 points AM/AOS award received in November,
2000 for Paphipedilum Prince Edward of York ‘Sam’s Spirit’; And an 90 points
FCC/AOS award received in June, 2001 for his second Paphipedilum
rothschildianum ‘Gigantic’, FCC/AOS.

been currently meeting in.
Room 4380
(For, August 26th 2001 and January 6th, April 7th
2002) is one of the two main rooms off of the cafeteria. Entrance is through the doors just west of
the ones we use for 1510. Walk straight
back to the cafeteria. Turn right upon
entering the cafeteria.
