Program:  Tim Volas

Oncidium Intergenerics

Meeting:

*   Bring plants for show and tell

*   Auction?  I believe we will have one – but we are still checking.  So if you don’t want to carry them for nothing please check with one of us before the meeting.

Tim has been growing orchids since 1993 as a hobbyist, and commercially since early 1997 when he began working for Chadwick and Son Orchids outside of Richmond VA. He is now working for Eden Hill Greenhouse, a family business..

Eden Hill Greenhouse was established in 1986 by Pete Volas as a wholesale commercial greenhouse producing flowering plants year round.  With 18,000 sq. ft. of greenhouses, we produce everything from hanging baskets and spring annuals to cyclamen, orchids and poinsettias.  This year (2002), we opened our facilities to retail customers and hope to further expand our retail business.

Orchids were added to production in early 1999 by Tim Volas and have slowly been taking over the greenhouse they are grown in. We have a good selection of Oncidium Intergenerics and Mini-Catts and have begun acquiring species, Paphs., Bulbos., and other misc. genera.

He will be bringing plants.  You will need to call him to check on availability and to make sure that the plants you are after are brought to the meeting.

Orchid List

I have listed orchids types that I have at least 4 plants of in stock.  I will take reservations of plants by your Society members on a first come-first serve basis by date and time. I am giving the same talk to the Michianna Orchid Society Sept. 14, so I may sell out of some varieties. I will be bringing plants to the meeting that I have not listed as well.

Eden Hill’s Orchid Mix:  Composed of coir (chopped coconut husk), charcol, and fire expanded clay, this mix provides a good balance of air exchange to moisture retention and breaks down slowly.  Works well on all genera.  1 gal. bags $5.00 ea.

Special Event:

I believe that John has arranged for all of our members to attend this event if they would like to do so.  We should have more information at the meeting.  Mark your calendars.

On November 14, 2002, Don Fordyce will be visiting Grand Rapids, Michigan at the Fredric Meijers Gardens.  This is the monthly meeting for the Grand Valley Orchid Society.

Mr. Fordyce is known worldwide for his contributions in the cattleya field, especially compact, mini-hybrids.  He speaks at many of the major orchid shows across the country.

As we are lucky enough to get Don into Grand Rapids to speak, we would like to offer an invitation to your society to attend as well.  We would like everybody to have the chance to see a speaker of this importance to the modern orchid enthusiast.

It will be in Grand Rapids, Michigan, at Fredric Meijer Gardens at 7:00 PM.

Elections!

This is an election year and everyone should think about running for office.  Anyone with an interest in running should let it be known.  Nominations will be taken.  Note:  The Treasurer's position is open and will need to be filled.
