Orchid Extravaganza – Brookfield Zoo

 Saturday & Sunday, February 15 & 16, 2003

During regular zoo hours guests can visit the zoo’s Tropic World, Perching Bird House, and The Swamp exhibits to view a variety of colorful orchid species, including Oncidium sp. (butterfly orchid), Angraecum sp. (Christmas star orchid), and Ludisia sp. (jewel orchid). All species will be identified.

Throughout the weekend, orchid experts will host demonstrations and question and answer sessions in Discovery Center, located near the north entrance. At. 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., Dr. Pati Vitt, conservation scientist from the Chicago Botanic Garden, will share her work on the endangered eastern prairie fringed orchid. At noon and 2:00 p.m., Steve Meyer, horticulturist from the Lincoln Park Conservatory, will share his passion for orchids and interesting stories of pollination schemes as well answer questions about orchids. And then at 12:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. Craig Nielsen and Dan Fox, Nielsen – Massey Vanillas, Inc. will explain the process of making vanilla extract from the bean or seedpod from the vanilla orchid. Thanks go to Ken Ashbaugh, Don Berndt, Dea Bishop, George Elliot, Georgiann McWilliams, Russ Hibbard, Joe Kanamueller, and Shirley Talpa for setting up our display.  Also, thanks to those that helped with teardown.  If you have never been there, it is just amazing to see a full display taken down and packed away in a half hour.  Thanks to all who supplied plants for our display.  You made our display worth the effort.

Of a special note, Carolyn Albert entered two cross-stitched orchids in an Art Category and received one First Place and one Second Place ribbon. Likewise, Shirley Talpa enter two colored pencil orchid drawings in an Art Category and received one First Place and one Second Place ribbon.  Both Carolyn and Shirley are first time art entrants.  Nice Showing!

We have many people with many talents in our society.  Who will be the next to shine?  The next show is only a month away.
