ANNOUNCEMENTS
FOR April, 2001
PLACE: NO meeting this month
Program:
NO meeting this month
Meeting:
There
is no meeting this month! I added the
date to the last newsletter out of habit.
Since the Michiana show is so close to the meeting date, all are urged
to attend the show instead. We will
resume our normal schedule in May. The
show is 31 Mar – 1 Apr 2001, at the Cook Energy Center in Bridgman, MI. NOTE: Setup will start at 3 pm (not 1 pm as in the
past).
Paul Schlender:
Not many of our members have known of the
passing of Paul Schlender in January. Because of his advanced aged, he was 94,
and illness he had been unable to attend our meetings in recent years. For that
reason many of our newer members had never met the Schlenders. Of a quiet and
gentle nature, he was one of the mainstays of the former Dunes society,
which merged and became the Dunes-Kalamazoo Orchid Society. He was known for
his love for cattleyas. As he used to say, "the bigger the better"
and he grew them well. The Schlenders lived in Stevensville. In private
life he operated a business in St. Joseph, which was a vendor of milling
supplies. He is survived by his wife, Antoinette (Tony), and two sons.
Tony is now in an assisted living home in Bridgeman. Her address is
P.O. Box 370, Bridgeman, MI 49106. Maybe some of you who knew this couple will
want to send a card.

Thanks Georgiana!
Georgiana McWilliam gave a talk on orchids
to the Marshall Garden Club and donated her honorarium to our society. I am always impressed with the folks that
donate time and even plants to the auction to support the club!
Of interest?
From the Orchid Digest (an internet list
digest), submitted by Carl and Carol Miller:
“There is an easy safe (read legal) way to
create the sketch. One of your members must have a digital camera.
If so, ask him to take some up-close pictures of a few orchid flowers. He
will also have a copy of the software PhotoStudio or a similar program.
If using Photostudio, load your pictures in and open. Go to
"Effects", then "Fine Art", then "Sketch" and
then "Pencil". This changes the picture to a pencil sketch
which can be sized and put on a floppy and saved into WP as a jpg. file.
I don't know if these files can be saved in WP but they can in MS Word.
Maybe someone else can answer this.”
Email Address?
If you have an email address, and you are
not getting the newsletter via email, please send the address to
me. It is much easier, faster and less
expensive to get the email version to you!
