Phalaenopsis, What About Those Other Orchids?
Meeting:
Bring plants for show and

Meeting:
Kathy & Ron Jones turned their
love for orchids into a profession over 7 years ago. Two years ago they
moved from Haslett where they had a 880 square foot greenhouse, to Perry where
they now have a 3200 sq. ft. greenhouse, and hope to also reconstruct the old
one soon.
Orchids by Katheron specializes in the unusual, fragrant, and flashy-- we think
that customer education and support is extremely important.
We actually acclimatize our plants to Michigan’s distinctive light
conditions, and find out what the plants need to bloom before we sell
them. Generally at any time there are 8,000 to 9,000 plants in the
greenhouse, which does not include community trays or pots.
Ron handles the mechanical work, breeding and also does flasking. Kathy
has served in several positions, including President of the Greater Lansing
Orchid Society. She is an instructor for many different forums of Master
Gardeners, garden clubs, and other related interested groups.
She has 8,000 to 9,000 orchids and would appreciate
calls or email as to what someone is interested in.
She has an a web site on the Orchid Mall www.orchdmall.com that is not up to date…

PROPOSAL FOR NEW PLANT AUCTION PROCEDURE
DUNES-KALAMAZOO ORCHID SOCIETY
Many
members have plants they would like to sell but, feel they are too valuable to
place in our regular auction as a donation.
Maybe you have a plant you paid a high price for but, found you can’t
bloom it. This is a way to benefit
other members by allowing an opportunity to purchase these plants and for you
to recoup some of your investment.
Your
board of directors discussed this and would like to present the following:
1) Provide an “auction table” at each
meeting. This way, you can look at the
plants before the auction to decide what you want.
2) A simple new form, to be developed, stating
the minimum bid, the person donating the plant and, a plant description.
3) If you’d like to donate a plant to the
auction, as in the past, with all proceeds going to the society, simply mark
the minimum bid at $0.00.
4) If you’d like to sell your plant, mark down,
as the minimum bid, the amount you want for the plant. Anything over and above that amount would go
to the society. For example, you bring
in a plant, mark the minimum at $20.00 and it sells for $27.00. You get your $20.00 and our society gets
$7.50. If the plant doesn't reach the
minimum, you keep your plant.
It
seems this may be a way to benefit all members in keeping our collections
viable. If we purchase a “mistake”,
someone else may be able to grow it well, and we can get some money back to,
WHAT ELSE - buy some more orchids!!!
