Notes from our last meeting:

  • Epsom salt has calcium/magnesium in it. It may be used once a month for good root growth and color intensity. Use 1 to 1½ Tablespoons per gallon of water. Do not mix in fertilizer with this mixture.

  • Water (most important) - The best quality water to use is rain water. Natt’s collects rain water in a

32-gallon container. Let city water set over night before using. Do not use softened water on plants. If

an orchid’s leaves are wrinkled, it needs water. Some need watering 3 to 4 times a week. If pseudobulbs

wrinkle, water more. Some orchids go into resting periods and do not need much water at that time. In

the case of the dendrobium nobile-type, slow down watering to once every two weeks until you see

growth coming up and then fertilize. The “Habenaria” looks dead during its resting period. Do not water

      at all during this time.

  • Light    (light needed from low to high)    Paphiopedilum - low light

                                                                             Phalaenopsis - more light

                                                                             Cattlea - even higher light

Vandas and dendrobium - highest light

Best growing windows are east and south. If leaves are too green, they are not getting enough

light. If leaves are yellow, they are getting too much light and not enough fertilizer.

  • Temperature - Different orchids require different temperatures. If growing outside, 80 to 85F in the

shade is okay but if orchids get too hot, they get stressed. Cymbidiums and the dendrobium nobile-type,

may stay outside until it is about 40 degrees. The Miltoniopsi needs temperatures of 80F. Masdevallias

like temperatures under 75F. They like a cool pot, such as clay.

  • Humidity - Most orchids like humidity at 65 to 70 degrees. A humidity tray may be used to achieve this.

An inverted clay pot inside another larger clay pot works well with keep the humidity high for plants such

as vandas or Masdevallias. Spraying orchids with water can also help with this.

  • Fertilizer - Fertilize weekly with a 3-10-10  fertilizer for young plans or ones that just finished blooming.

For mature plants, use, MSU fertilizer, which is sold by Natt’s. To promote blooming use 10-30-20. If

leaves are too green, look at the fertilizer. If leaf tips turn brown, the plant is getting too much fertilizer.

The plant can be flushed with water if needed.

  • Potting - Most orchids like to be repotted in the early spring. There are special mixes for dendrobiums, Phalaenopsis and “antelope types.” Natt’s uses a coconut mix and repots at least every two years with

this medium. They also add in gravel, sand and clay balls. When using sand and clay balls, fertilizer is

needed more often. Some like to be mounted, such as the Brassavola nodosa. When potting, do not

use too big of a pot. The hard-to-grown Vanda likes to grow in a plastic or wooden basket, preferably in

a greenhouse due to a need for high humidity. They need to be watered every day or every other day.

They also grow well with the use of charcoal in a clay pot.

  • Air movement  -  Air movement prevents diseases, fungus and insects. Keep pots set apart to allow for air movement between the plants.

Send pictures of your orchid-growing area to Georgiann McWilliams at georgiann@charter.net. She will print the pictures in color and start a notebook. Below are growing areas of DKOS member, Kay Thomas.
